What are the causes of tooth fractures?

There are many causes of tooth fractures. These are tissue weaknesses due to tooth decay, fractures due to trauma and impact, faulty or incomplete restorations or abnormal movements such as clenching (bruxism), which we call parafunctional movement, can cause tooth fractures.

Tooth enamel is one of the strongest tissues in our body, but due to many reasons such as inadequate oral hygiene and oral care, an incorrectly made restoration, infection and damage in the gums and surrounding soft tissues, bone loss, systemic diseases, a caries-prone diet, genetic predisposition to caries or inadequate buffering of the acidic environment of saliva, microorganisms in the mouth begin to cause damage to the tooth enamel. This damage is minimal at first. But if it is neglected, it starts to grow and expand. The strong walls of the tooth begin to thin and become flimsy. In such a situation, your tooth can break even if you consume soft foods that are not too hard.

Another cause of tooth fracture is impact and trauma. In case of impact-related fractures, it is absolutely necessary to take a radiograph and check whether there is a fracture in the jawbone and the root of the tooth. If there is, it is necessary to examine what kind of fracture it is. It should be checked whether there is mobility, that is, whether there is swaying in the teeth exposed to impact, whether there is bleeding and destruction in the surrounding soft tissues and gums of the tooth. The level of the tooth fracture should be examined. It should be checked whether the pulp, i.e. the living part of the tooth, has opened. The tooth should be checked for discoloration. In teeth exposed to trauma, a lesion may sometimes occur at the root tip. It should be checked by taking radiography. Even if it is not noticed on the first radiograph, it should be checked again with follow-up and control radiographs in the future.

In general, fractures due to falls are frequently seen in children. Upper central teeth are mostly affected. Sometimes the fractured piece may be stuck in the lip. The lip should be palpated and controlled. Another reason is incomplete or incorrect dental treatment. By incorrectly made restorations, we mean unnecessarily removing too much intact tooth tissue and leaving the side walls of the tooth too thin. In such a case, thin and unsupported tooth walls will become more fragile against chewing pressures. By incomplete tooth restorations, we mean that a tooth with a very large restoration and thin walls does not have a crown (veneer) to protect it against chewing pressures. Generally, teeth that have undergone endodontic treatment, that is, root canal treatment, have large restorations on the teeth due to both the high and large caries and the dynamics of the treatment itself. Therefore, a veneer-endocuron should often be made on teeth with root canal treatment. These treatments greatly increase the life of the teeth and their resistance to chewing pressures.

Another cause of tooth fracture is bouruxism. In other words, bruxism can damage not only the teeth but also the jaw joints and jaw and head muscles. Bruxism, which is more common when you are unconscious while sleeping at night, causes abrasions on the teeth and wedge-shaped fractures in the neck areas of the teeth. These fractures can cause serious sensitivity. Bruxism also causes recession in the gums, causing the tooth to become more susceptible to decay in the receding gum areas. Teeth clenching, one of the biggest causes of which is stress, can become a habit even if the stress disappears. The most effective treatment method for the habit of clenching teeth today is masseter, i.e. chewing muscle botox and protective night plates. These two treatment options can be applied individually or both can be applied.

Can a tooth break for no reason?

If we mean tooth fracture out of the blue, without any breaking or falling action: unfortunately, our answer will be yes. Among the reasons listed above, some of them actually express this situation. Nevertheless, if we simply list the reasons for tooth fracture that are not the result of impact:

1.Tooth Decay

Tooth decay weakens the structure of the tooth. This increases the risk of tooth fracture. If you neglect your decayed teeth, it is possible for them to break and cause bigger problems.

2.Excessive Teeth Grinding (Bruxism)

The problem of bruxism, which we answered in more detail in the previous question, can lead to fracture, especially if you squeeze it a lot at night and apply stress.

3.Anomalies in the tooth

Existing anomalies and structural problems in the tooth can cause the tooth to break over time if not intervened in time.

4.Dental Prostheses or Fillings

Dental fillings or prostheses made with any incorrect intervention can cause the teeth to break over time.

5.Jaw Disorders

Jaw disorders can cause fractures by putting extra pressure on the teeth.

How Is Broken Tooth Extraction Performed?

First of all, fractured tooth extraction does not contain very big differences from normal tooth extraction. Broken tooth extraction may vary according to the size and shape of the fracture. Therefore, an examination is required first.
During the examination and evaluation, X-rays can be taken and the root condition of the tooth is examined.
Immediately afterwards, local anesthesia is applied to reduce pain and discomfort. The tooth is extracted with appropriate tools and methods, stitches are applied and the recovery and healing process is expected. It is necessary not to neglect the controls in the future.
As you can see, extraction of a fractured tooth involves a road map similar to a normal tooth extraction in the general picture, although there are slight differences in the procedure.

Tooth Fracture Treatment

Treatment of a tooth fracture may vary depending on the location and size of the fracture and the general condition of the tooth and mouth. While the treatment of a posterior fractured tooth is different, a different treatment process can be applied to patients who come with the complaint that the edge of my back tooth is broken.
For small fractures, dental fillings or bonding methods called bonding can be applied. In general, this method is applied only if there are fractures or fractures in the enamel layer of the tooth.
For slightly deeper and medium-sized fractures, dental crowns or veneers are usually used. This treatment process is important to restore the form and function of the tooth. This method can be used in patients who come with the complaint that the edge of their filled tooth is broken if the fracture is large.

In the case of bad and very deep tooth fractures, the tooth fracture treatment process is a bit more laborious. This problem can be overcome with root canal treatment, endodontic treatment, broken tooth extraction, implant placement or dental bridge. The choice of treatment depends on the healthiest method the physician sees and the patient's expectations.
A temporary treatment can also be applied; however, this is not recommended by dentists and Videntis.

Broken Front Tooth Treatment Prices

Fractured front teeth treatment prices are an important issue, as the front teeth are the teeth that appear every time we smile, and their aesthetic appearance is much more important than the back teeth. Tooth fracture treatment should be applied specifically for each patient. Therefore, the prices of broken front teeth treatment may vary from patient to patient and according to the treatment method.
