We have all been there. You are at a dinner party in Izmir, enjoying the sunset. Someone tells a hilarious joke. The table erupts in laughter. But while everyone else is throwing their heads back and laughing freely, you catch yourself doing that thing. You feel your lip rising, and your hand instinctively shoots up to cover your mouth. Or maybe you tighten your upper lip, turning a genuine laugh into a polite, tight-lipped smirk.
Why? Because you hate your "Gummy Smile."
In photos, your friends say, "Come on, give us a big smile!" but you hesitate. You feel like when you smile, all people see is gum tissue, not your teeth. You feel like your teeth look small, square, or childlike.
If this sounds familiar, we want you to know two things:
You are not alone. This is one of the most common aesthetic complaints we hear from patients flying in from the UK, Europe, and the USA.
You don't have to live with it.
At Videntis Dental Clinic, located in the chic, seaside district of Bostanlı, Izmir, we specialize in what we call "Pink Aesthetics." We believe that a beautiful smile isn't just about white teeth; it's about the frame around them. In this guide, we are going to explore why a Gummy Smile happens, the high-tech (and surprisingly painless) ways we fix it, and why Izmir is the best place to finally set your smile free.
Medically known as Excessive Gingival Display, a gummy smile is usually defined as having more than 2-3 millimeters of gum showing when you smile. Ideally, your smile should reveal your pearly whites, with the gums acting merely as a delicate, pink frame. When that frame becomes too thick, it steals the show.
But why did this happen to you? Is it just bad luck? Usually, it comes down to three main culprits:
1. Passive Eruption (The "Hidden Tooth" Syndrome): This is the most common cause. Your teeth are actually normal sized! However, during childhood, your gum tissue didn't recede as much as it should have. It stayed low, covering the top half of your enamel like a thick blanket. Your beautiful adult teeth are hiding underneath that gum tissue, waiting to be revealed.
2. The Hyperactive Lip: For some patients, the issue isn't the teeth or the gums; it's the muscle. The muscle that lifts your upper lip (the levator labii superioris) is like a bodybuilder—too strong. When you smile, it pulls your lip way up high, like a theatre curtain opening too fast, exposing everything underneath.
3. Skeletal Structure: Sometimes, the upper jawbone (maxilla) has grown vertically more than usual. This pushes the entire gum and tooth structure downward.
Regardless of the cause, the result is the same: A loss of confidence. But at Videntis, the solution is tailored to your specific anatomy.
For years, cosmetic dentistry focused only on "White Aesthetics"—veneers, whitening, crowns. But imagine buying a priceless painting—let's say a Picasso. Now, imagine framing that Picasso in a thick, uneven, distracting neon-pink frame. Does the painting look good? No. The frame ruins the art.
That is the philosophy at Videntis. We don't just look at your teeth (the art); we look at your gums (the frame). Pink Aesthetics is the art of sculpting the gum line to create symmetry, balance, and the perfect ratio. Without fixing the "Pink," the "White" will never look perfect.
If your gummy smile is caused by extra gum tissue covering your teeth, this is our favorite solution. Patients often hear the word "surgery" and get scared. Please, erase the image of scalpels and stitches from your mind. At Videntis in Bostanlı, we use Laser Technology.
How It Works:
Digital Design: First, we take a photo of your smile. Using Digital Smile Design (DSD) software, we draw exactly where your new gum line should be to make your teeth look longer and more elegant. We show you this on a screen before we touch you.
The Procedure: We numb the area with local anesthesia (you feel nothing). Then, using a specialized dental laser or electrosurge unit, we gently "erase" the excess gum tissue.
The Result: It is immediate. As soon as we hand you the mirror, you will see it. Your short, square teeth are suddenly long, rectangular, and adult-like.
Does It Hurt? This is the best part. Because the laser cauterizes (seals) the tissue as it works, there is usually zero bleeding and no need for stitches. The healing time is incredibly fast—usually 24 to 48 hours. Most of our international patients go out for a nice dinner in Bostanlı the same evening.
If your problem is a "Hyperactive Lip," cutting the gums won't help. We need to calm down that muscle. Enter Botox. Yes, the same stuff used for wrinkles is a miracle worker for gummy smiles.
How It Works: We inject two tiny, precise drops of Botulinum Toxin into the muscles just under your nose. This relaxes the muscle. It doesn't paralyze your face; you can still smile, eat, and talk perfectly. But the muscle loses the strength to pull your lip all the way up to your nose. It lifts the lip just enough to show your teeth, but keeps the gums covered.
The Pros:
It takes 5 minutes.
Zero recovery time.
It’s the perfect "Lunch Break Procedure."
The Cons:
It is temporary. The effect lasts 4 to 6 months. You will need to repeat it. But for many patients, it’s a small price to pay for a perfect smile without surgery.
If you love the effect of Botox but hate the idea of getting injections every few months, Lip Repositioning is the permanent answer. This is a minor surgical procedure performed under local anesthesia at our clinic. We make a small incision on the inside of your upper lip (completely invisible from the outside). We remove a small strip of tissue and suture the lip in a lower position. This physically limits how high your lip can rise. It’s a "mechanical" stop. The results are permanent, and the scar is hidden inside your mouth.
Often, our international patients want the full transformation. They have a gummy smile and their teeth are yellow or chipped. In this case, we combine Pink and White Aesthetics.
Step One: We perform the Gingivectomy (Gum Lift) to lengthen the teeth and create symmetry.
Step Two: Once the gums have healed (usually a few weeks, or sometimes done in the same visit depending on the case), we place Porcelain Veneers or Zirconia Crowns.
This is the treatment protocol for the breathtaking "Before & After" photos you see on Instagram. By fixing the gum levels first, the veneers look natural, balanced, and perfectly proportioned.
You might be thinking, "Can't I just do this at home?" You can. But here is why health tourists choose Videntis in Bostanlı:
1. The Eye for Design: Gum contouring is not just about cutting gums; it's about artistry. If a dentist cuts too much, they can expose the root surface (causing sensitivity). If they cut unevenly, your smile looks crooked. Our doctors are trained in Aesthetic Periodontology. We use the Golden Ratio to calculate exactly how much pink to show.
2. The Technology: We don't guess. We use Digital Smile Design (DSD). We plan the surgery on a computer first. You approve the look before we start. This removes the "fear of the unknown."
3. The Cost: In the UK or USA, laser gum contouring and veneers are prohibitively expensive, considered "cosmetic luxuries." In Turkey, you can get the same high-standard treatment, using the same technology, for a fraction of the price—while enjoying a holiday in the beautiful Aegean city of Izmir.
Life is too short to hold back your laughter. A Gummy Smile is not a life sentence. It is a minor anatomical detail that we can fix in a single afternoon.
Imagine the feeling of laughing at a joke and not worrying about your lip. Imagine taking a selfie and loving your teeth.
If you are planning a trip to Turkey, or if you are an expat living in Izmir, come visit us at Videntis. Let’s take a look at your smile. Whether it’s a little laser touch-up or a quick Botox injection, we have the solution to make you smile wide—and keep your hand off your mouth.

Author's Note: This blog post is for informational purposes. The best treatment for a gummy smile (Botox vs. Surgery vs. Laser) depends on the underlying cause. A clinical examination at Videntis is required for a proper diagnosis.
